What Gutter Guards Do — and Which One Fits

Gutter guards help keep leaves and other debris from settling inside your gutters. That can improve flow between cleanings and keep you off the ladder. The right openings depend on the trees around your home, roof details, and how much surface cleaning you are comfortable with.

Guard design Round-hole perforated cover Powder-coated small-hole screen Fine micro-mesh surface
Best fit Larger broadleaf debris Most suitable broadleaf homes Pine needles and finer debris
Homeowner benefit Keeps larger leaves out of the trough Practical broadleaf protection at our best value Filters smaller material before it reaches the gutter
Tradeoff Fine material can pass through Grit and small seeds can pass through Pollen, leaves, and grit can collect on the surface

We recommend Workhorse for many broadleaf properties because of the guards Kent has seen years after installation. Pine-heavy roofs may call for micro-mesh. We confirm the fit during a site survey.

The maintenance truth

Gutter Guards Still Need Attention

No gutter guard eliminates routine maintenance. Leaves, pollen, shingle grit, and twigs can collect on top, and smaller material may still reach the gutter. Guards help reduce the debris inside and the ladder work you would otherwise face.

We generally recommend checking and servicing protected gutters in late spring and again around mid-December. Trees and roof conditions can change that schedule.

What’s Included With Every Package?

Included with every package

Clean, Re-Seal, Then Install

Your package includes a free initial Basic Gutter Cleaning. We also re-caulk existing end caps and corners as needed on suitable gutter sections before installing the selected protection.

  • Remove loose debris from accessible gutters
  • Re-caulk existing end caps and corners as needed
  • Install the selected guard on approved sections
  • Check the finished fit and explain routine maintenance

The included Basic Cleaning does not cover water flushing, downspout disassembly, or packed-debris removal. Loose or damaged gutters, major leak repairs, and additional downspout work are quoted before we proceed.

Still Have Legacy Downspouts?

A guard keeps debris from piling up inside a gutter, but a narrow or damaged downspout can still limit drainage. If your site survey shows a need, we can upgrade legacy downspouts to Hi-Flow downspouts while we are there.

This is optional and quoted separately from the guard package. We will explain the locations and price before any additional work.

Protection works as a system

Guards manage debris at the top. Downspouts carry the collected rainwater away. We look at both during the site survey and recommend only the work your home needs.

  • Check existing outlet and downspout condition
  • Identify legacy or undersized downspouts
  • Quote any Hi-Flow upgrade separately

Gutter Guard Questions

Wondering which guard fits your home or what happens after installation? Start here.

Heartland mascot thinking about a gutter guard question
Do gutter guards eliminate cleaning?

No. They reduce the debris entering a gutter. Leaves and other material can still collect on the surface, so periodic checks and service remain important.

Which option do you recommend?

For most suitable broadleaf properties we serve, Kent recommends Workhorse as our best value based on his experience seeing guards after years in service. Pine-heavy or rainwater-catchment properties may benefit from fine-debris protection.

What is included in the $1,560 Workhorse example?

Up to 200 linear feet of Workhorse Protection on an eligible home, a free initial Basic Gutter Cleaning, re-caulking existing end caps and corners as needed, installation, and a final check. Tax, extra footage, old-guard removal, structural repairs, difficult access, and optional downspout upgrades are separate.

Can guards go on my existing gutters?

Often, if the gutters are securely attached, draining correctly, and otherwise suitable. The site survey confirms condition. We quote necessary repairs separately rather than covering a problem.

Will micro-mesh handle every property better?

Micro-mesh filters finer material and can be useful around pine trees. It can also need more surface attention where pollen, leaves, or roof grit accumulate. We recommend the option that fits the property.

Can I upgrade my downspouts too?

Yes. We can quote Hi-Flow downspouts separately when legacy or damaged downspouts limit drainage. Your site survey identifies which locations would benefit.
